The European Atlas of Fertility Treatment Policies, a joint project by Fertility Europe and the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF), unveiled its latest edition on 3rd December 2024 in the European Parliament, during the launch event hosted by MEP Merja Kyllönen (The Left, Finland) and Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus (S&D, Poland). This landmark publication evaluates and compares fertility treatment policies across Europe, serving as a key resource for policymakers in advancing reproductive rights and access to fertility care.
The 2024 Atlas spotlights significant progress in Poland and Ireland since the previous edition of 2021, showcasing how targeted policy changes and advocacy can improve access to fertility treatments for individuals and couples facing infertility challenges.
The launch event features a distinguished panel of speakers, including:
- Neil Datta, Executive Director of the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF)
- Anita Fincham, Advocacy Manager of Fertility Europe
- Carlos Calhaz Jorge, Past Chair of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE)
- Maja Staśko – patient representative from Poland
- MEP Billy Kelleher (Renew, Ireland)
This Atlas serves as a call to action for European countries to improve their fertility care frameworks, ensuring equitable and timely access to treatments for all citizens. It evaluates the accessibility, affordability, and quality of care, while also highlighting best practices and gaps that demand urgent attention.
MEP Merja Kyllönen (The Left, Finland) said:
The work that is being done around fertility treatment policy is invaluable. Only knowledge can move people in the right direction in a sustainable way. I have great respect for the professionals working in this field, whose work makes such a big difference to the lives of so many people in Europe.
The collaboration between Fertility Europe and EPF underscores the shared commitment to advocating for inclusive reproductive health policies. By combining expertise from patient associations and reproductive health advocates, this Atlas equips policymakers, healthcare providers, and civil society with the tools needed to make informed, impactful decisions.
