FActs! – The Game

FActs! is a Serious Educational Game and information portal which aims to digitally reach teenagers aged 15-18 in European countries to check and improve their knowledge and awareness of fertility issues. It is available online for desktop and mobile devices.

FActs! The game is presented with attractive animated graphics and a selection of avatars for players to choose from. It consists of 4 scenarios from the daily life of teenagers with 10 questions about fertility and the risk factors for reproductive health. Every correct answer earns a star. Each question is followed by a screen with feedback information. At the end of the game, the player can compare their overall score with the average of their peers.

All complete sets of answers will be stored in a centralised database, along with information about the age, gender and country of the respondent. The database allows for reports and raw data export for the purposes of subsequent scientific analysis and advocacy tools. The data will also be used for advocacy campaigns to introduce fertility education at schools in Europe.

In addition to the game, the website of FActs! hosts a section with information resources for teenagers and educators in the field of fertility awareness and reproductive health. The informational part of the website will be constantly developing.

FActs! July 2025 Report

A snapshot of fertility awareness among Europe’s youth—delivered through serious play

The FActs! July 2025 Report presents an innovative look at fertility education across Europe, using a novel tool: a five-minute educational game designed to assess and improve young people’s understanding of fertility, infertility, lifestyle factors, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Since its launch at the ESHRE Annual Meeting in 2023, the game has been played over 10,000 times across 50 countries.

This report compiles and analyses data from over 6,000 teenagers, 2,700 adults, and 400 pre-teens. It offers new insights into what Europe’s youth know – and don’t know – about reproductive health.

Key Findings

Strong awareness of lifestyle risks: Teenagers scored highest on questions related to smoking, alcohol, narcotics, and exercise – topics typically covered in school health education.

Widespread gaps in fertility knowledge: Most teenagers significantly underestimated the impact of age on fertility and overestimated the likelihood of pregnancy per cycle, with these questions scoring consistently low. This likely reflects the prevailing educational focus in schools, which emphasises pregnancy prevention over empowering students to make informed, future-proof reproductive health choices.

Limited understanding of STIs’ impact on fertility: While individual STI awareness was moderate, only 36% of teenagers correctly identified all three major infections (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis) as linked to infertility.

Infertility basics better understood: Teens performed relatively well on questions about what to do and when to seek help for infertility, suggesting that targeted messages in education campaigns are making an impact.

Why It Matters

Fertility awareness is typically overlooked in standard education, which often focuses narrowly on preventing unplanned pregnancy and STIs. However, with increasing age at first birth across Europe, understanding how fertility changes over time and what can affect it is crucial for informed decision-making.

This report highlights both the promise and the shortcomings of current educational efforts. It underscores the need to expand school curricula to include comprehensive, age-appropriate fertility education, starting early.

The FActs! initiative demonstrates that serious topics can be taught through engaging tools. It also shows that with the right approach, we can give young people the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and future.
